Back Pain Remedies

At ChiroMom, we have years of experience providing Bellmore residents with chiropractic care for back pain relief. While chiropractic adjustments are an effective means of reducing back pain, there are things you can do to make sure you are experiencing chiropractic care’s full range of benefits. Following are the natural back pain remedies our chiropractor most often recommends.

Heat Therapy

Back pain caused by muscle spasms or overexertion is often alleviated with heat, which helps to loosen tight muscles that cause back pain. Apply heat with a heating pad or soak in a hot bath with soothing Epson salts. Relax and let the heat do its work.

Stretching Exercises

Simple stretching exercises throughout the day help alleviate and prevent back pain. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing in one place without stretching and moving, especially if proper posture isn’t possible. Before starting the workday or any exercise routine, perform basic stretching techniques. Focus on those that stretch your neck and back. Both basic yoga postures or simply stretching your back from side to side by rotating your neck and hips can accomplish this. Throughout the day, take three to five minutes to get up and stretch at least every hour or two. This helps to prevent muscle spasms and tightness that often causes back pain.

Herbal Anti-Inflammatories

Many herbal teas and drinks can be made at home and are both healthy and cost-effective. Ginger and turmeric are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties. For best results, use fresh ginger or turmeric, peeled and thinly sliced. Use one tablespoon (or two or three slices) steeped in two cups of hot water for ten minutes. Green tea and chamomile teas are also known for their calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea contains caffeine and should be avoided at night, while chamomile tea is calming and relaxing and best suited for nighttime. Use loose-leaf tea whenever possible.
